The Incarnation is a book series unlike any other. First of all its by Piers Anthony. Which would give any clues to the strangeness of these books to any avid readers of his. basically each book is on a different aspect or god. War, Death, Evil, Time, Gaia and Fate from the top of my head. The first thing you realize in the very first book, "On a Pale Horse" is to cheat death you have to kill death and that the Gods aren't what they seem to be. Basically all of the Gods are originally mortal men and women who by some form or another take the places as the aspects of the gods that run our world. Each aspects office has specific requirements to take there place. Take death for example, for him to retire and someone take his place, he has to be killed in the process. But by far probably my two most favorite in the series is Time and Evil. Father time runs backwards, its kind of confusing to explain but I'll try my best on this. The first time he meets the aspect of evil, Lucifer. Lucifer acts as though they have been friends for years, yet its the first time he's ever actually met him. Lucifer trys to explain it to him like this, "Oh this is the first time your meeting me? well then its the last time for me, and the first of many visits to come for you" Lets see your head spin on that bit of a comment. He literally lives backwards. Evil, is awesome. I'm not even going to try and explain it all to you. Its just awesome, the main character is actually a priest during the crusades. With the spirit of his long dead wife as a guide to tough cases in the event of witch craft trials. He's only called on the tough cases because somehow, he always knows if the defendant is lying or not. Must be because of his wife's spirit, hmmm, lol. But immediately pick one of these books up for yourself when you have a chance. They are amazing.

Bearing An Hourglass - Time
When life seemed pointless to Norton, he accepted the position as the Incarnation of Time, even though it meant living backward from present to past. The other seemingly all-powerful incantations of Immortality--Death, Fate, War, and Nature--made him welcome. Even Satan greeted him with gifts. But he soon discovered that the gifts were cunning traps and he had become enmeshed in a complex scheme of the Evil One to destroy all that was good....
With a tangled Skein - Fate
When the man Niobe loved was shot, she learned that she had been the target, in a devious plot of the Devil's. Hoping for revenge, she discovered, too late, how intricate his scheming was, and that he had managed to trap her son and her granddaughter, Luna. Niobe's only chance to save them was to accept a challenge by the Prince of Deceit--a challenge to be decided in Hell and in a maze of Satan's devising!
Wielding A Red Sword - War
Mym was a dutiful son, but rather than agree to his father's choice for his marriage, he took up the Red Sword, symbol of office of the Incarnation of War, in order to ameliorate some of the suffering caused by Earth's constant petty wars. But Mym discovered that Satan was waiting to trap him, and he must now take desperate measures to outwit the evil genius who aimed to destroy the world....
Being A Green Mother - Gaia
Orb had a rare gift--the magic which manifested whenever she sang or played her harp. No one could resist her music. But she knew that greater magic lay in the Llano, the mystic music that controlled all things. The quest for the Llano occupied Orb's life. Until she met Natasha, handsome and charming, and an even finer musician. But her mother Niobe came as an Aspect of Fire, with the news that Orb had been chosen for the role of Incarnation of Nature--The Green Mother. But she also warned of a prophecy that Orb was to marry Evil. Could she be sure that Natasha was not really Satan, the Master of Illusion, laying a trap for her...?
For Love of Evil - Evil
The Man Who Would Be Satan
Parry was a gifted musician and an apprentice in the arts of White Magic. But his life of sweet promise went disastrously awry following the sudden, violent death of his beloved Jolie.
Led down the twisted path of wickedness and depravity by Lilah the harlot demoness, Parry thrived -- first as a sorceror, then as a monk, and finally as a feared inquisitor.
But it wasn't until his mortal flame was extinguished that Parry found his true calling -- as the Incarnation of Evil. And, at the gates of Hell, he prepared to wage war on the master himself -- Lucifer, the dark lord -- with dominion over the infernal realms the ultimate prize!

And Eternity - Good
With this seventh book Anthony concludes his series called the Incarnations of Immortality. Previous works have focused on Death, Time, Fate, War, Earth, Evil; the subject here is the Incarnation of Good, and the setting is an alternate Earth where Magic and Science share power. Each of the offices of these Incarnations must be filled by a human who will not age while occupying the position. Following the theme of the series, this book is concerned with the transition to a new Incarnation of Good. Each Incarnation has different rules for change, and that of Good requires the agreement of all six other Incarnations, including Evil, a decided complication that the other five must deal with. Anthony's excellent prose and well-thought-out plotting deliver an enjoyable and logical surprise solution to the conflict, following the resolution of Luna Kaftan's critical vote (a subplot of the entire series).
